The #2 Shalhevet Firehawks Catch Heat Late, Defeat #15 Katz Yeshiva High School

In the Tier I Qualifiers, #2 Shalhevet fended off #15 Katz Yeshiva High School Storm for the 45-32 victory.

The 15 seed got off to a strong start, led by Haim Elmakies’ efficient offense. After one frame of play, the Storm got off to a 12-8 lead, 10 of them coming from Elmakies. Katz cooled down in the second quarter, though, and after some back-and-forth with the lead, Shalhevet ended the half up two, with a score of 17-15.

Shalhevet—inspired by a devastating loss to TABC last year and a recent slump in Sarachek play—was led by a few star players in a contested third quarter. Players like Aiden Bitran, Ben Wintner, Yakov Liberman, and Player of the Game Sam Jacobson kept the Firehawks afloat, and the #2 seed was winning by just a single point heading into the final eight minutes.

In those few crucial minutes, Shalhevet’s stellar defense held Katz to just two points: the latter entered the quarter with 28 points on the board and left it with 32.

The MVP of the game was Sam Jacobson, #11 for Shalhevet. He put up a double-chai: 18 points and 18 boards. Add to that two steals and a block, and the 6’3” forward put on a show for the Washington Heights crowd.

Shalhevet looks to take down #10 Magen David to advance, while Katz will take on #18 seed Fuchs Mizrachi in a Tier II qualifier matchup.
