Stifling defense, clutch free throw shooting helps Fasman get much-coveted first Sarachek victory

Updated: Sep 2, 2019

Doni Miretzky’s six first-quarter points helped Fasman get off to an 11-4 first quarter lead.

After not allowing a three in the first quarter, Fasman continued its defensive prowess, holding a large lead at halftime. Nonetheless, Katz Junior Noah Mamann was dominant defensively, recording three steals in the half.

After falling to a ten-point third quarter deficit, Katz got cut the Fasman lead to five thanks to excellent play by big men David Kahane and Adi Rotenstein, as well as Brendan Lasko, whose hustle and excellent defense kept Katz in the game. Lasko, who scored 15 in the previous game, made his only three pointer with two minutes left in the game to make it a one-possession game.

Fasman’s Doni Miretzky and Yaakov Mendlesberg hit many key free throws within the final two minutes to seal an eventual 41-33 win.

Fasman will play in the Tier II semi-finals on Sunday, while Katz Yeshiva will move to Tier III.
