On Thursday, March 24th, the (5) Shalhevet Firehawks will play against the (12) Ida Crown Aces for a spot in Tier I. Shalhevet had some lofty goals coming into the season, and have underwhelmed so far. They weren’t able to win the Glouberman tournament and they tied for a regular season championship in their conference. They can still win Sarachek with a good stretch of basketball and finish the season strong. Avi Halpert is a star for the Firehawks as a junior and one of the best players in the tournament. He can do it all; he can score at all three levels, he can facilitate and he has potential to be a great defender. Ida Crown enters with a good roster this season. Star player, Joey Cohen, is a great point guard who can score and create easy opportunities for others. His pick and roll partner, Jon Okner can elevate and finish around the rim with the best of them, as well as protect the paint nicely with his length.
Firstly, defense wins championships. Some Sarachek games have a tendency of being high scoring and fast paced. It’s going to be key for both teams to lock in defensively in this one. Shalhevet’s defense is led by captain Joel Ashegian, who is a tenacious on-ball defender. He can change the game on that end of the floor. Secondly, the three ball plays a big part in Sarachek games. This one should be no different. Matthew Schreiber is the sharp shooter for the Aces. Look for him to hoist up a lot of shots from long distance. Josh Moradian has the ultimate green light for the Firehawks and can shoot them out of games.
The winner of this matchup will face the winner of (4) DRS vs (13) YULA in the Tier I quarterfinals on Friday. The loser will face (21) Beren on Friday in the Tier II qualifier.
This primetime Tier I qualifier will take place in the Max Stern Athletic Center and tip off will be at 8:30 pm. The game will be broadcast by MacsLive; you can watch the game live here.
