An incredibly balanced attack by the Yeshiva Maccabees was all that they needed as they easily won against the Maritime Privateers in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon. Originally scheduled for Saturday night, the game was postponed due to heavy snowfall in the area. The Macs were led by Gabe Leifer, Ryan Turell, and Oren Betesh, all scoring 12 apiece in the victory. The Macs continued their dominant play in the Skyline Conference, extending their undefeated record in conference play to 9-0.
How it Happened:
Maritime jumped out to a 7-2 lead after Ryan Donovan hit a 3 and a layup.
Gabe Leifer scored the Macs’ first 7 points as he too hit a 3 and a layup, topped off by a steal and a fast break dunk.
Matan Zucker finished a tough layup to cap off a 15-2 Yeshiva run and put his team ahead 17-9.
Leifer found Oren Betesh open for 3 on back to back possessions, and again later in the half to give the Macs a commanding 36-21 lead just before halftime.
Betesh continued his great shooting with another 3 to give the Macs a 50-29 lead.
Ethan Lasko got a nice circus layup to go as part of an 11-0 Macs run to extend the lead to 55-32 with 10:37 left.
Leifer found Jordan Armstrong for a pair of dunks on back to back possessions to put the Macs up 31 with just over 4 minutes to go.
Ball Movement:
The Macs showed great patience on the offensive end, making sure to get the best shot possible on every possession. Their non-stop motion offense was too much for Maritime to handle as the Macs were getting open looks left and right. It often seemed as though the Macs were forgoing easy and open jump shots, yet just a few passes later, they would be scoring on an even more open chance right under the basket.
Three Point Shooting:
Hitting shots from deep is a big part of the Macs’ offensive game, and they had no problems doing so today, as they went a solid 8-for-19 from beyond the arc. Oren Betesh was a big part of that success today, shooting 4-for-5 from deep.
For Maritime (3-14, 0-10):
Senior guard Ryan Donovan played hard, putting up 17 points and 5 rebounds in the losing effort.
Jaylin Gray provided a spark as he scored 9 points along with 2 assists.
Nick Ovanessian recorded 3 steals on the defensive end.
For Yeshiva (16-1,9-0):
Gabe Leifer had an all around great game as he had 12 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.
Oren Betesh tied his career high with 12 points on a fantastic shooting day for him.
Matan Zucker did a great job in the paint, putting up 10 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.
