Gameday Preview: Yeshiva @ SUNY Geneseo

The YU Macs will be taking the court mere hours after claiming their first victory of the season, facing off against the Geneseo Knights in the Michael A. Freilich Tournament in Oneonta. After losing their season opener on Wednesday in heartbreaking fashion, the Macs evened their record last night with a 84-79 victory over Oneonta and will be looking to continue their momentum before their home opener this Wednesday.

Geneseo comes into this matchup with a 1-1 record, beating Alfred State before losing to John Carroll by 10 last night. Junior guard Sebastian Pacheco played extraordinarily well in their season opener, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. With Pacheco off the court last night, the Knights relied on Robert Pericolosi and Josh Garelle for much of their scoring.

THREE POINT SHOOTING:

The Macs, who usually excel from beyond the arc, were fortunate to come away with the win after shooting an abysmal 4-for-25 against Oneonta. Many were heavily contested, so the Macs will need to do a much better job of creating open looks and then knocking the shots down once they’re in that position.

SHARING THE ROCK:

Scoring is not much of an issue for the Macs, but in order to put up points against a feisty defense in Geneseo, they’re going to need to keep the ball moving. The Macs have recorded an assist on 36% of their makes so far this season - keeping that stat up while avoiding too much isolation will prove vitally important as efficient passing can help break down the Knights’ defense.
