Gameday Preview Purchase @ YU

Zachary Sicklick

While the phrase “All Gas, No Brakes” may not have aged well for the New York Jets, it perfectly captures the mindset Yeshiva University needs as the Skyline Conference regular season nears its conclusion. Fresh off a critical victory in their biggest game of the season, the Macs now aim to carry that momentum into another matchup. Awaiting them is a familiar opponent: the Purchase Panthers. The Macs already secured a decisive 16-point win over Purchase earlier in the season, but this rematch promises to be anything but routine. Yeshiva (12-8, 9-2 Skyline) enters the contest riding high after a commanding 84-69 triumph over first-place Maritime. Meanwhile, the Panthers (10-10, 6-5 Skyline) are also coming off an emphatic performance, dismantling Merchant Marine by 31 points.

Fans should prepare for an offensive showdown, as two of the Skyline Conference’s premier scorers go head-to-head. Purchase’s Rashid Nikiema is averaging nearly 20 points per game, while Yeshiva’s sharpshooting leader, Zevi Samet, continues to light up the scoreboard with over 21 PPG. Since his electrifying 36-point outburst against St. Joseph’s Brooklyn, Samet has been virtually unstoppable, averaging over 30 points per game on an astonishing 49% from beyond the arc. With the postseason approaching and every game carrying added weight, the Macs must embrace their high-octane mentality. If Samet and the Macs can maintain this confidence for the remainder of the season, they’ll inch one step closer to their ultimate goal. Buckle up—this one’s going to be a thriller.

Dominate the Glass

Rebounding has been a key factor for the Macs throughout this season. When they control the glass, they control the game. They have an 8-0 record in Skyline play when out-rebounding opponents, compared to just 1-2 when they lose the battle on the boards. In their first matchup against Purchase the Macs gave up 14 offensive rebounds, showing a key weakness. They will need to box out better to avoid giving Purchase second chance opportunities

Win the Turnover Battle

The Macs have been solid in the turnover battle this season, holding their own against opponents in that category. However, their strongest performances have come when they’ve gained a clear edge—most notably against Maritime, where they committed five fewer turnovers and controlled the game from start to finish. In order for the Macs to push for the division title, they will need to constantly win the turnover battle. The Macs' up-tempo style can be a weapon when executed properly, but careless mistakes can quickly turn into costly points for the opposition. By prioritizing smart decision-making, limiting unnecessary risks, and maintaining control in transition, the Macs can finish the season strong, win their division, and build momentum heading into the playoffs.
