Gameday Preview: Men’s Basketball vs Wesleyan

On Wednesday night, January 18th, the Yeshiva University Maccabees will travel to play the Wesleyan University Cardinals. The Macs are coming off a long break after going on a terrible three-game losing streak; they struggled to put the ball in the basket in that stretch, averaging just 63 points per game. The Macs must figure out a way to get good looks for their shooters from here on out if they want to win games. If Max Zakheim can continue scoring at a high rate, that should allow for Samet and Betesh to work off-ball to get open from downtown. Matan Zucker has been the playmaker for this team with 76 assists on the season, which is 40 more than the next guy on the roster.

The Cardinals are 10-5 on the year and are currently on an eight-game win streak. Senior guard Preston Maccoux is the team’s top scorer, averaging 14.6 points per game. He gets a ton of help from his other two guards, Gabe Ravetz and Nicky Johnson, who are averaging 13.5 points per contest. They run the offense through Johnson, who leads the team in assists with 6.1 per game. Shooting the three-ball is not the Cardinal’s strong suit— they shoot just 29% from behind the arc on the season. If they want to compete with the Macs they have to make sure not to get caught up in a three-point shooting contest against a team that can light it up.
