Gameday Preview: Men’s Basketball vs Old Westbury

On Thursday, December 8, the Yeshiva University Maccabees will travel to Farmingdale, New York for a meeting with the Old Westbury Panthers. After winning their last two games, the Macs have a record of 7-4 and are 5-1 in conference play. In their previous game, a matchup with Mount Saint Vincent, Matan Zucker had career highs in both points and rebounds with 29 and 16, respectively. Additionally, Max Zakheim made his long-awaited return, scoring 17 points in 17 minutes.

Old Westbury enters the matchup looking for their first victory of the season after starting out 0-5. Their schedule included an early season loss to Division I Saint Peter’s, the Cinderella team of last season’s tournament who reached the Elite Eight before falling to North Carolina. Averaging just 11.2 assists per game as a team, Old Westbury ranks second to last in the Skyline conference in the category and last in scoring as a team, with just 63.6 points per game. On the other hand, the Panthers are second in the conference in offensive rebounds per game, with 14.8.

The Panthers' leading scorer is Zachary Cummings, who is currently averaging 14.8 points per game. Although he is shooting just 21% from three-point range, Cummings is comfortable taking shots from beyond the arc, as evidenced by his 9.4 attempts per game. Forward Max Weinberg provides a spark off the bench for the Panthers, with 8.8 points per game on 50% shooting. A solid defensive effort should allow the Macs to build on their last two games and pull out a win.
