Gameday Preview: #1 Magen David vs #16 MTA

Regardless of the outcome, the top-ranked Magen David Warriors are basking in the glory of clinching their coveted Yeshiva League championship.  Now, they have their sights set on proving their dominance as the nation's best Jewish basketball team. With an impressive 35-2 record and a staggering 21-game win streak, they're here to settle some unfinished business.

Their journey begins against the host school, the 3-15 MTA Lions, who are eager to capitalize on their last chance for success. The Lions will need to play with freedom, utilizing their inside-out game led by 6'5" big man Josh Treuhaft, sharpshooter Doniel Baron, and guard Koby Wolk. Defensively, they'll rely on their zone defense to contain the Warriors, who can go nine men deep and are relentless on both ends of the court.

Leading the charge for the Warriors is Mark Sardar, who reached the milestone of 1,000 career points earlier this season. Then there's Yeshiva League Finals MVP Philip Sherr, an old-school point guard known for his consistency and ability to steady the offense. Alongside him is the dynamic junior Joshua Chabbott, touted as one of the top players to watch in the tournament. There’s Moses Smeke, the all-star transfer from Hillel. There’s Jack Haber, who adds grit on both ends, while Jack Franco brings toughness, overcoming an ACL injury to make a crucial impact in the comeback overtime victory against the Flatbush Falcons in the finals just ten days ago.

Under the guidance of coach Ikey Dweck, known for his strategic adjustments on the fly, the Warriors will keep MTA on their toes. MTA will need to embrace discomfort and adapt quickly, while the Warriors aim to start fast and silence the home crowd early.

With a packed opening day schedule, this 5:30 PM at the Max Stern Athletic Center that'll be broadcasted by Yosef Silver and Avery Stepner MacsLive matchup promises to be an exhilarating start to the tournament.
