RAMAZ RAMS WIN SARACHEK CHAMPIONSHIP
Mark Rocklin
Published on: 03/30/2009

Max Feldstein (shown here in a photo from 2008) and the Ramaz Rams defeated the MTA Lions to win the 2009 Sarachek championship game.

March 30, 2009 (MacsLive Reporting Services, New York) – Tournament MVP Mikey Berg scored 20 points, Zachary Cooper pulled down 15 rebounds, and Gabe Schwartz shut down MTA’s leading scorer as the Ramaz Rams defeated the MTA Lions in convincing fashion, 48-26, to take the Tier-I championship in front of a capacity crowd on Monday at the Max Stern Athletic Center.  The win capped off a dominating performance at the 18th Annual Red Sarachek Tournament by the Rams, who won each of their three games by 18 points or more, and outscored their opponents 163-98.

The sixth-seeded Lions had come in to the Tournament as a long shot, but defeated the higher-seeded HAFTR Hawks on Friday and the vaunted YULA Panthers in the semifinals on Sunday to make their improbable appearance in the finals. Ramaz, though, controlled this game from the start, with Max Feldstein scoring the first eight points of the game as part of an 11-0 Ramaz run. With Schwartz playing tenacious defense against MTA’s Yisrael Feld, the Lions’ offensive attack was virtually incapacitated as the Rams jumped out to an early lead that they never relinquished. Ramaz held MTA to just eight points in the first half, the Lions’ lowest offensive output of the year.

MTA showed signs of life coming out of the locker room at halftime, scoring six quick points to start the third quarter. But after Ramaz called a timeout, the Rams went on an 8-2 run that put the game back out of reach for the Lions, who would never mount a serious comeback bid.

Schwartz’s defense against Feld earned him a spot on the Sarachek all-star team. Feld entered the finals with 91 points on over 50 percent shooting in his first three games, but was held by Schwartz to just six points on 3-for-15 (20%) shooting in the championship game.

Feldstein, who finished with 17 points in the game and 42 points at Sarachek, was named to the First Team All-Tournament.

Berg, who led the Rams with 54 points during the Sarachek Tournament, was named Tournament MVP.

MTA’s Feld was named to the First Team All-Tournament, and Dani Weinberger was named to the Sarachek all-star team.
