March 30, 2009 (MacsLive Reporting Services, New York) – In the second championship game of the day on Championship Monday at the Max Stern Athletic Center, the Berman Cougars used a strong second half to rattle the Kushner Cobras and win the Tier-III first-place game, 51-41.
Ari Werthheimer led the scoring for Berman in the first quarter, scoring all nine Berman points and keeping the score close. Neither team was able to gain much traction in the first half, and with Berman down by two and time winding down in the half, Werthheimer nailed a three from the corner to give Berman their first lead of the game. Berman went into the half leading 23-19.
Berman came out of the locker room in a one- three-one zone that slowed down the Cobras attack. Werthheimer, who finished with 17 points, hit a three-pointer that ignited an 11-0 run and Berman never trailed again. They stormed out to a 39-25 lead to end the third quarter.
Kushner opened up the fourth looking to get back in the game, with Kenny Safar nailing a long three-pointer. But Berman, as it would continue to do throughout the rest of the game, had the answer, winning the Tier-III first-place game, 51-41.
The Cougars had three players in double figures: Ari Wertheimer led Berman with 19 points 8 assists and 2 rebounds; Jacob Colburn and Aaron Zuckerman also scored in double figures and had over 5 rebounds each.
The Cougars, who came into the Tournament seeded 14th, finished 13th overall. The Cobras finished 14th overall.
