Los Angeles Bragging Rights Go To YULA Jason Kirshner, Associated Staff Writer Published on: 03/30/2009 March 30, 2009 (MacsLive Reporting Services, New York) – Good Morning LA! At 9:30 A.M (Eastern Daylight Time) the YULA Panthers and Valley Shaarey Zedek Wolfpack met at Max Stern Athletic Center in a Tier-I third-place game. Though both teams played a longer roster than usual, it was the Panthers who took home the bragging rights, 71-64. Both teams got off to a sluggish start in this early morning battle. Valley Torah awoke first and took the first lead of the game, but Aaron Escovitz (12 points) would soon catalyze the Panther offense. Stevie Rubin would then add to the tally, hitting two three point field goals, sending the YULA Panthers out to its first quarter lead of 16-10.
The feisty Panther man-to-man defense proved hard for the Wolfpack to deal with as they until Josh Wohlfarth (18 points) hit a jump shot midway through the second quarter. YULA was able to get good production from its bench, with Itamar Nissim (11 points) and Nathan Barns sparking the Panthers on an 8-0 run. The Wolfpack made a run late in the second quarter, but the Panthers were able to answer, sending the game into the half with the YULA on top, 31-20.
In the second half, the Panther defense would yet again prove too much for the Wolfpack to deal with as they went without a field goal until Aaron Lieberman would find the hole at the three minutes in. Meanwhile, junior guard Zack Finder (15 points) would find his stoke, igniting n 8-2 run for YULA to seemingly put the game out of reach, giving YULA a 15-point lead. But Valley responded on the back of Eli Block (9 points), cutting the YULA lead to just five. But that was as close as Valley would get. Coach Dave Winik took a thirty second timeout and YULA exploded out of the huddle, driving the lead all the way back up to 18 points. The game was never in doubt again after that point.
With the win, YULA finishes in 3rd place overall at the 18th Annual Red Sarachek Tournament. Valley finishes 4th.

First of all learn how to spell, second of al,l Valley is a much MUCH better team than the Valley Team that showed up. They were not beaten as much as they were beating themselves.

shabsai:: what are you- a first grade tee ball coach? valley was pathetic- in ALL 3 games. quit with your excuses. i have seen valley play in los angeles and they were no different- they are a team that lacks skill and are not coached well. they played no different in new york. a team cant be 'off' for a whole tournament- maybe one game. they will without question go down as the worst first seed in sarachek history.

I agree with Robert's post regarding Valley's coaching-it is horrible. The players have plenty of skill the coach has none.

I was always taught that if you don't have something nice to say than don't say it. I gained a great deal in skills and in attitude that has helped me for life from the so called "horrible" coaching. This means more to me than having a trophy. May Hashem always be proud of our words and actions.

Robert, excuse me if I'm wrong but how would you know if valley torah has bad coaching. True they are a good team plus have height and all the talent you would want. But you can not say they have bad coaching. They had a great year and they have a good team its just there players didn't step up when they were suppose to.

The play- by-play announcers stated three things for each VTHS game: they had the height, the speed but not the strategy. In the world of basketball, strategy is another word for coaching.
The VTHS players did the best they could( and in many cases excelled) with the strategy that they were provided with.

to mta king- mta had home court advantage, and with obnoxious fans and unsportsmen like demeanor mta proved that there is way to much testosterone roaming washington heights, to the one young talented player on MTA my advice would be to transfer to a school with a real basketball program, because one player will never win a team a championship, ask kobe or wade... but seriously, for mta the only thing that could be seen in the tournament was ALOTTA DUDES!!

mayer israel, you hve no idea what you are talking about. the coaching staff this year was amazing not only in basketball but also in life. they were exceptional role models as well. and the guys love him.
p.s. jealousy leads you nowhere

I am a VT player, and believe me, the worst coaching i have ever played for. The life lessons that these people are talking about are all lies that came from the coaching staff in order to cover up their lack of coaching abilities. There was no adjustment made in the 2nd game when Ramaz went on their incredible run of 3's, not to mention NO strategy when it came to the yula game.... enough said.

thats not true at all. they went from a box one to a three two, to even a four one. that game was lost bc ramaz shot unbelievably. learn your facts.
