SHALHEVET FIREHAWKS TAKE TIER-IV FIRST-PLACE Mark Rocklin, Staff Writer Published on: 03/30/2009 March 30, 2009 (MacsLive Reporting Services, New York) – Championship Monday began as the sun barely began to rise over the Max Stern Athletic Center on the Wilf Campus of Yeshiva University. The opening game featured Block against Shalhevet in the Tier-IV first-place game, with the Heat walking away with the trophy, 55-43. Gal Avraham scored an early bucket to get things going early for Shalhevet. That would be the only scoring for the first few minutes until Moshe Andrew scored for Block to tie the game at two. It seemed as if both teams were shaking off early morning jitters, as the first quarter was filled with turnovers on both ends of the floor. But after a quick timeout by Shalhevet, the scoring and intensity began to pick up. Three-point champion Jacob Moskowitz nailed a three from the far corner to give Shalhevet the lead at 7-6. Joey Mufson of Block hit a three pointer of his own to open the second quarter, but Shalhevet responded with a big bucket on the other end as both teams continued to trade baskets for the next several minutes. Block went into the locker room at halftime leading 21-18.
In a drastic change of events to start the second half, Shay Shalom Alkoby flew in for an acrobatic lay-up to spark a 12-0 run for the Heat. Jacob Moskowitz had six points during that span, hitting two long three-pointers to give Shalhevet a nine point lead. Block responded with a 12-0 run of their own, wasting no time in getting back into the game and regaining the lead. But Moskowitz checked back in the game and came up big yet again for Shalhevet, draining a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. When the dust settled and the fourth quarter began, both teams came out determined to win. Moskowitz hit another three to bring the Max Stern Athletic Center crowd to its feet, and giving Shalhevet a 5 point lead. Block, though, wouldn’t go quietly, and went on 4-0 run to get within 1. Moskowitz ended that run, draining his sixth three-pointer of the game keeping Shalhevet ahead by 4. Shalhevet extended their lead to 9 and never looked back as they went on to win the first Tier IV championship in their schools history by a final score of 55-43. Jacob Moskowitz led Shalhevet with 20 points and 3 rebounds.
