The second matchup of Big Sunday will feature a Tier III semifinal clash between the 14th ranked Fuchs Mizrachi Mayhem (Beachwood, OH) and the #17 Maimonides M-Cats (Brookline, MA).
Mizrachi will try to rebound from a sloppy loss to Weinbaum in which they looked overwhelemed after dominating the 19th ranked Atlanta Lions on the opening day of the tournament. The Mayhem stumbled out of the gate and never really recovered, trailing by double digits for most of the game.
The Mayhem have been paced by the dazzling play of Yonatan Spero, who played sparingly in the second half against Weinbaum but still managed to put up a team-high 10 points for Mizrachi. The team looks to repeat its performance against Atlanta, in which a buzzer-beating shot at halftime by Elad Ohayon foreshadowed a 3rd quarter explosion by Mizrachi, who never looked back in an incredible 65-29 victory. The Mayhem maintained a balanced attack on offense, getting key contributions from Akiva Lautman, Jeremy Sherman and Yonatan Spero in the win.
The M-Cats will look to get back to their winning ways after a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the 10th seed Cooper Maccabees. Despite the loss, Maimonides continues to impress with their strong showing in the tournament thus far, punctuated by their 46-41 upset of the #16 Virginia Raiders. The M-Cats were able to weather a 23 point performance by Raiders guard Yoni Lewis thanks to the staunch defense of Adin Liss, who shut down 6’5 center Shmuel Glickman for most of the game. The M-Cats will look to put in the same balanced offensive attack that helped to defeat the Raiders and will surely look to contain the high scoring guards of the Mayhem.
