Preview: #7 HANC Vs. #10 CJHS (8:30 P.M. Eastern)

The first day of the 2010 Sarachek Tournament will be punctuated with a match up between the HANC Hurricanes (Uniondale, NY) and the Chicagoland Tigers (Deerfield, IL).  Tip off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Eastern (7:30 p.m. Central) on Thursday at the Max Stern Athletic Center.  The game, a Tier-I qualifier, can be heard live at MacsLive.com.

The first Jewish basketball team to win the Illinois High School Association regional basketball tournament, the Chicagoland Tigers come to Sarachek looking to build on their strong postseason showing.

Led in scoring by small forward Aaron Cohen and center Sam Botbol, the Tigers move the ball quickly and are very efficient in half court sets. They rely on their guards to set the tone of the game, and will look to senior guard Daniel Eisenberg for leadership. Adam Seidenberg, listed at five-foot-ten, is the Tiger’s leading rebounder.

The Tigers got a mid season jolt when sophomore Danny Stamos transferred in. Stamos, the team’s 6th-man, provides key depth for Chicagoland.

Chicagoland made it to the round of 32 in the Illinois state championships. They lost in the first round of the sectionals.

The 2008 Sarachek runner-up HANC Hurricanes come into the 2010 Tournament, their second, as this year’s 7th-seed. The Uniondale, NY, school won 17 games against 11 losses this year, with three of those losses coming against top-seeded HAFTR – all in close contests.

The Hurricanes feature six-foot-three star guard Benjy Ritholtz, who averages 19.8 ppg and recently passed 1000 points for his career. He saved his best games for some of the toughest opponents, scoring a season-high 35 points against #1 HAFTR, and averaging 25.3 points in six games against Sarachek teams, including HAFTR, #2 Ramaz, #4 Frisch, and #11 Shalhevet. Ritholtz, who is expected to compete for individual honors at Sarachek, was named to the All Tournament Team at the Cooper Tournament in Memphis.

HANC is a smaller team than in recent years, and looks to make up for its lack of size by increasing the pace of the game. In the half court set, the Hurricanes look for scoring opportunities from the perimeter.

HANC’s 18th win of the season came just this Monday night at the expense of #4 Frisch. The game was won at the final buzzer on a ten-foot shot by Jack Klein, sending the Hurricanes to the Yeshiva League semifinals and eliminating Frisch from the playoffs.

The winner of this game advances to the Tier-I quarterfinals, played Friday at the Max Stern Athletic Center.  The loser will play on Friday at TABC in the Tier-II qualifiers, against an opponent that won a Tier-II qualifier on Thursday.
