Preview: #5 MTA Vs. #12 Beren (7 P.M. Eastern)
MacsLive Staff
Published on: 03/09/2010

The first prime time game of Thursday night features the host school MTA Lions (New York, NY) and the Beren Academy Stars (Houston, TX).  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. Central).  The game, a Tier-I qualifier, can be heard live on MacsLive.com.

Standing in at the 12th-seed, the Beren Stars of Houston are headed back to the Sarachek Tournament for the seventh time. Despite a low seed placement, the Stars have proven to be dangerous with a roster loaded with sharpshooters and big men.

After finishing second at the Yaffee Tournament, the Stars, led by a trio of Pollacks (Yoni, Dovi, and Tani), hope to make some noise at Sarachek. They will be missing Isaac Buchine and his 8.4 points per game; Buchine did not make the trip because of a personal obligation back home.

The Stars remaining top scorers are both big men. Forwards Zach Yoshor and Joseph Gomez lead the team with 14.4 and 10.7 points per game, respectively.  Gomez also leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.5 per game.

Point Guard Sam Gorme was voted to the All Tournament Team at the Kingwood Northeast Christian Tournament. He leads the Stars in assists, with 3.5 per game.

Coach Daniel Gibber’s MTA Lions, the host team at the Sarachek Tournament, are looking to make the most of their home court advantage. The Lions were a perfect 9-0 at the Max Stern Athletic Center prior to their upset defeat at the hands of the Magen David Warriors on March 2.

The Lions’ success may hinge upon six-foot guard Yisrael Feld, who is averaging over 20 ppg this season and is MTA’s spark on offense. Feld averaged 19.3 points per game at the 2009 Sarachek Tournament, which he accomplished by shooting 46% over four games. Feld is supported by forward Yehuda Guttman, who has progressed this season into a solid low post player, averaging 9 ppg.

Forward Mayer Stromer, along with guards Eli Davis and Yehudah Meiteles, round out the Lions’ starting five. Forward Ike Pariser, who brings some more size to the lineup, is considered an intangible factor off the bench. They will try to execute a game plan that centers around pushing the ball into the open court and limiting their opponent’s high-percentage scoring opportunities.

The winner of this game advances to the Tier-I quarterfinals, played Friday at the Max Stern Athletic Center.  The loser will play on Friday at TABC in the Tier-II qualifiers, against an opponent that won a Tier-II qualifier on Thursday.

Your "preview" only shows that you know very little about the team from Houston. Beren lingered around the 500 mark all season long largely because of the absence of their injured point guard Isaac Mirwis. While Beren may have some size and some capable scorers, Mirwis is the catalyst that fuels the Beren machine. He is healthy once again and read to tear it up at Sarachek. While your preview is fun to read, your omission of such a difference-maker and game-changer exposes your ignorance regarding this dangerous team. If MTA takes Beren lightly, they will find themselves playing in Tier II come Friday morning.

Should be a great game. Thanks for the preview. I'd love to see what
Beren has got to offer one of the yeshiva league's best.

Word from Houston is that their fantastic freshman, Yoshor, broke his foot last night in an exhibition game. This clearly gives MTA the edge, since Beren is now without Yoshor and Isaac Buchine. Can MTA take advantage of a shorthanded Beren team, or will Mirwis & Company pick up the slack? We'll find out tomorrow night, it should be a good one.
