Preview: #8 ICJA Vs. #9 Berman (4 P.M. Eastern) MacsLive Staff Published on: 03/09/2010 Ari Feiger of the Ida Crown Aces. The Red Sarachek championship bracket tips off at 4 p.m Eastern (3 p.m. Central) Thursday at the Max Stern Athletic Center, with the Ida Crown Aces (Chicago, IL) and the Melvin J. Berman Cougars (Rockville, MD) locking up in a Tier-I qualifying match up. The game can be heard live on MacsLive.com. After capturing the Sarachek crown in 2008, the Ida Crown Aces are hoping to make it two in three years. They did not participate in the 2009 Sarachek Tournament. The Aces, led by first-year coach William Eason, posted a 17-7 record.
Zack Bloomberg, who leads the team in scoring with 16.9 points per game, anchors Ida Crown’s attack. The Aces play tight defense and look to create turnovers, pushing the tempo to try to score in transition.
Berman won first place in Tier-III last year, and are returning four starters. Led by three players who score in double-digits, the 15-6 Cougars come into the 2010 Sarachek Tournament as the 8th-seeded team. Coach Steve Achhammer’s squad, at Sarachek for the 5th time, hopes to improve upon its best finish of 8th place.
The Cougars’ style of play relies heavily on their big men. The team’s top scorers – Jacob Colburn (12.3 points 4.4 rebounds per game), Aaron Zuckerman (11.5, 8.5), and Ari Wertheimer (10.2, 3.5) – are also Berman’s leading rebounders.
The winner of this game advances to the Tier-I quarterfinals, played Friday at the Max Stern Athletic Center. The loser will play on Friday at TABC in the Tier-II qualifiers, against an opponent that won a Tier-II qualifier on Thursday.
