Preview: #16 Block Vs. #17 SCY (1 P.M. Eastern)

The Southern California Yeshiva Hawks (San Diego, CA) will become the 49th school to participate at the Red Sarachek Tournament when they tip off against the Block Yeshiva Blockbusters (St. Louis, MO) at 1 p.m. Eastern (12 noon Central, 10 a.m. Pacific) Thursday at the Max Stern Athletic Center.  The game, a Tier-II qualifier, can be heard live at MacsLive.com.

The Hawks went 13-4 this season, including 10-1 in the Frontier Conference. The Hawks are led by six-footer Ethan Gipsman, who leads the team with 18.2 points per game. He also contributes 6.4 rebounds.

Two other forwards, Aviv Arusi (11.2 ppg) and Benjy Darey (10.6 ppg), also average in double-figures. Arusi and Darey also lead the team in rebounding, with 8.3 and 8.1 boards per game, respectively.

Although not a particularly tall, the Hawks get most of their scoring from their forwards. But those points tend to come from outside shooting in the half court set or in transition.

The 5-8 Block Yeshiva Blockbusters enter the tournament missing one of their team leaders, having lost Moshe Andrew to a knee injury. For Block, the injury is more significant than merely having to replace the lost production. The Blockbusters’ roster is down to just seven players.

Block will look to guard Yair Eckhardt and center Akiva Axelbaum to make up for the lost production and eat up some extra minutes. At six-foot-five, Axelbaum figures to face very few opponents who can match his height, especially in Tiers II, III, or IV.

Block’s win-loss record may be slightly misleading. With just 13 games played, several of their losses were by one or two points. They may be poised for a turnaround in fortune.

The winner of this game will play on Friday at TABC in a second Tier-II qualifier.  The loser will have a bye tomorrow, and will play in the Tier-IV semifinals on Saturday night at the Max Stern Athletic Center.

I can't believe the hawks got such a low seed and to be ranked lower then a team no one knows about, this game isn't going to be close we are going to win by 20 whether they have that kid or not.

Hawksrule, your compeltey wrong... Block is amazing.. i admit losing Moshe was a big blow.. as he not only gets 14-16 pts a game he is tall and a team leader but we still win by 40 pts..
