Preview: #15 Bialik Vs. #18 CTA (10 A.M. Eastern)

The 19th Annual Red Sarachek tips off Thursday morning at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. Central) with a Tier-II qualifier between the Bialik Bulldogs (Montreal, QC) and the Columbus Torah Academy Lions (Columbus, OH).  The game can be heard live on MacsLive.com.

After a disappointing season, the Lions are looking to top their season off with a surprise run at the Sarachek Tournament. First-year coach Matt Bailey is relying heavily on his guard play of Danny Leibowitz and Jared Stavsky. The Lions are a small team, with no one measuring over 6-feet tall, but will look to their guards to play tough against larger opponents and try to pull off some surprises.

Though the Lions are just 5-15 overall, four of their wins have come in their last 10 games, helping to overcome a dismal 1-9 start. The shift in fortune coincided with the installation of a new offensive system, putting more focus on the transition game and dribble-drive penetration.

The uptick in wins was also due in large part to the impressive play of the sophomore guard Stavsky, who is averaging 17.4 ppg while shooting 40% from 3-point range. Stavsky helped lead the charge in two impressive comeback wins late in the season.

Senior Josh Cohen, whose clutch shooting can be offset at times by his turnover rate, figures to be a pivotal swing player for the Lions. Aaron Polster and Nathan Meese round out the starters on the team.

The Bialik Bulldogs, participating in their third Sarachek Tournament, will look to get off to a good start in their early morning contest. The 15th-seeded squad will be unable to match their best finish of 6th-place, however, as they will not be eligible for the top tier.

Point guard Jarred Leiberman leads the Bulldogs in scoring, averaging 12 points per game.

The winner of this game will play on Friday at TABC in a second Tier-II qualifier.  The loser will have a bye tomorrow, and will play in the Tier-IV semifinals on Saturday night at the Max Stern Athletic Center.
