OR CHAIM KNIGHTS WIN TIER-II CROWN

March 30, 2009 (MacsLive Reporting Services, New York) – The Max Stern Athletic Center stage was set as the Cooper Yeshiva High School Macs met the Yeshiva Or Chaim Knights in the Red Sarachek Invitational Tier II first-place game. This one would be all Knights as they rode away with the title on the back of their man-to-man defense and prolific scoring, 61-33.

The Knights won the opening tip-off and never looked back, as they led a balanced scoring attack to run out to an early 9-0 run. But the story was the Or Chaim defense, which held the Cooper Macs scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, a streak finally broken when Ariel Cooper (13 points) recorded a field goal. The Macs’ shot an anemic 17% from the field in the first quarter, as the Knights jumped out to 10-2 lead after the first quarter.

Yonah Dorfman (11 points), Akiva Maresky (7 points), and Eli Herskovitz (18 points) exploded in the second quarter, widening the Or Chaim lead to 20 with a 14-2 run. The Knights would extend that lead in the remainder of the quarter, going into the locker room at halftime with a commanding 34-9 lead.

The Macs showed some life in the second half, with runs sparked by Ariel Cooper and Isaac Krupp. Or Chaim’s lead, though, was never in doubt, and, with their fans singing the Canadian national anthem, the Knights cruised to victory to take home the Tier-II trophy.

The Tier-II first-place finish will give Or Chaim a ninth-place finish overall. They entered the tournament seeded 15th. The Cooper Macs finished tenth overall at the Sarachek Tournament; they were initially seeded 13th.
